  • SHORT HISTORY OF TAMALE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

    Tamale Secondary School is the premier institution for secondary education in the northern sector of Ghana and was opened in 1951. It was at the time the country was at the verge of gaining political independence. Southern Ghana could then boast of countless Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers and other University Trained Graduates and Professionals who were well groomed to take up the mantle of leadership as ministers of state, parliamentarian and top officials who could influence decisions in government and in the public and private sectors of the economy. In contrast, the north had only one university graduate and about ten students attending various secondary schools in the south. That was all by way of higher educational attainment. It is needless to state that the north was greatly handicapped under the prevailing scheme of things.

    Pressure on colonial administration to open a secondary school had, therefore, reached a crescendo.

    Twenty pupils from middle form two (standard five in those days) were accordingly selected in 1950 through a special entrance examination. These were earmarked for the opening of the school in 1951 on condition that facilities such as science laboratories and qualified teachers could be secured for it. In the meantime, pupils were made to write the entrance examination to Achimota school and nine of them were earmarked to attend Achimota in1951 if the school did not open in that year.

    However, the northern territorial council members and other northern leaders pressed for the school to be opened as scheduled. It was, therefore, a matter of joy and celebration throughout the northern territories when twenty boys reported at the Tamale Middle Boarding School in January,1951. The twenty pupils who were selected in 1950 to start the school were happy when a teacher, Mr. I.E. Hayford of blessed memory, arrived at the scene in the latter half of 1950 and it had become certain that the school would open in1951.
